La Brea - Season 1

On January 15, 2020, La Brea was given a pilot order by NBC. The pilot was directed by Thor Freudenthal and written by David Appelbaum who was expected to executive produce alongside Avi Nir, Alon Shtruzman, Peter Traugott, Ken Woodruff and Rachel Kaplan. The production companies involved with the series are Keshet Studios and Universal Television.[31][32] On January 12, 2021, NBC gave production a series order. The series is created by Appelbaum.[1] On November 12, 2021, NBC renewed the series for a 14-episode second season.[3][33] On January 31, 2023, NBC renewed the series for a six-episode third season, when the cast was offered a release from the show in exchange for such a short season to be paid for, and accepted the offer.[5][34] According to the extremely reliable Marc Berman of ProgrammingInsider, however, it is possible that the renewal decision was reversed.[35]

In February 2020, Michael Raymond-James, Karina Logue, Zyra Gorecki, Caleb Ruminer, Angel Parker, Catherine Dent, Veronica St. Clair, Jag Bal, and Chiké Okonkwo were cast as series regulars while Natalie Zea was cast as the lead role.[31][36][37][38] In March 2020, Jon Seda and Rita Angel Taylor joined the main cast.[39][40] On March 4, 2021, Eoin Macken and Jack Martin were cast to replace Raymond-James and Ruminer, respectively and Lily Santiago joined the main cast. In addition, the surname of the family has been changed to Harris.[41] On March 22, 2021, Nicholas Gonzalez and Rohan Mirchandaney joined the cast as series regulars.[42] In April 2021, Josh McKenzie was cast as a series regular while Ione Skye was cast in a recurring role and Chloe De Los Santos was cast to replace Taylor.[43][44] On May 12, 2022, Tonantzin Carmelo and Michelle Vergara Moore were promoted to series regulars for the second season.[6] On July 15, 2022, Jonno Roberts joined the cast in a recurring role for the second season.[8] On September 22, 2022, Martin Sensmeier was cast in a recurring capacity for the second season.[7]

The series began filming in Melbourne, Australia, on May 3, 2021, and wrapped up in September 2021.[45][46] The main photography of the series was shot in regional Victoria. The recordings for the first season were completed in September. The effects-heavy production spent $71 million in Australia, more than $60 million of it in Victoria. It is the most expensive TV production in Victoria since Steven Spielberg's HBO series The Pacific completed in 2009.[47] The second season was scheduled to film in Victoria, Australia in the spring of 2022.[33]

The show, which follows a group of Los Angelinos after they collapse into a mysterious time-traveling sinkhole, is the perfect binge-watch to obsess over. It has just the perfect amount of mysteries and theory-inducing plot lines to keep you guessing and hooked through to the second season release date. Below, we've detailed all the ways you can watch La Brea right now.

During La Brea Season 1 Episode 10, the series provided answers about the sinkhole drama while sprinkling some cliffhangers for the next season. They also included a major character death, which was a surprise.

Eve struggled with guilt since she didn't believe Gavin about the visions. Their break-up scene, told in flashbacks, was so emotional. She obviously still loved him but wanted to feel safe again. She craved the man she fell in love with all those years ago.

It was heartbreaking watching Levi and Diana talk about love and relationships. Diana wanted to know if Sophia still thought about her since all she thought of was her and their wedding for three years.

Since La Brea is likely ending with a shortened third season, the creative forces behind the show might feel a little more comfortable killing off some of the bigger characters, especially as death on a time-travel show is never really final.

Jon Seda, who plays Riley's dad Sam, found this twist to be particularly "unexpected," and Josh himself, Jack Martin, also gave a shoutout to his second favorite twist (see above for his first favorite). "I guess my second favorite would be the end of the season where our two heroes, everybody's two favorite characters, the two sexy hot cool characters Josh and Riley are pulled into a mysterious portal taking them who knows where."

It seems like one of the themes of this season is taking responsibility. All of these characters are really forced to deal with their shortcomings and their failures from the past. How will that help Gavin grow in Season 2?

One of the great things about this show is that it had a very long gestation period. We started shooting the pilot right before the pandemic, and then we were shut down and then we didn't get a series pickup until a year after that. So over that year, we started our writers' room to develop more scripts and went at a pace that allowed us to think more deeply about the story and the long game over the seasons. So yeah, the answer is, we definitely have a lot planned out and know where we want to go. I think that's really important with shows like this, but it's also important that you keep yourself open and flexible to new ideas because you never know where inspiration is gonna come from. But having certain signposts along the way is important, but giving yourself the flexibility along the way to make moves and go in different directions is always important, too.

Yes. Shooting in Australia has been an amazing experience. They have this beautiful natural terrain that really suits the environment of 10,000 B.C. in every way. The challenge is really the scale of the project. We have 13 series regulars. We have a huge computer graphics/visual effects budget. There's just a lot of moving pieces. Those are probably the biggest challenges, the scale and scope of the project. But I think with anything, you just manage it piece by piece and break it down into individual parts and then things start to become more manageable.

We're always open to doing flashbacks. We did flashbacks for the family in certain episodes in the first season and we'll continue to do that. It's never going to be a show based around flashbacks and we're definitely open to that idea. But certainly un-peeling mysteries and layers to all of these characters down there will be an important part of the show. Also, unveiling new mysteries and layers to the world that they're in. Those two ideas will definitely be at the center of the show in season 2.

Well, I mean, the death of a parent certainly has a huge effect on anyone and Lucas is going to be struggling with, especially as we begin season 2, thinking about all the ways that their relationship went wrong and having his heart broken just as they were starting to mend fences. So it's going to be something that he's really going to have to reckon and it is going to influence his story. I won't get too deep into that, but it is going to be a big emotional part of the adventure that he begins in season 2.

Yeah, there will be new people that he's forming relationships with. One of the fun things about ensemble shows like this, is the pairings of characters. That's another thing that we're getting into in season 2: the different pairings of characters that we didn't see in season 1. He's going to be with characters you might not expect him to be with. Josh McKenzie, the actor who plays Lucas, is such a dynamic actor. He's from New Zealand and has so much energy and dynamism, I'm really excited to expand the story.

Okay, another big question from the finale: what is that massive building that Aldridge has brought Scott to? I have a feeling you're not going to tell me, but is it at least something we'll find out early in season 2?

Well, that giant building is definitely something that's going to be explored in season 2 and, like with the first season of the show, we're going to give you answers and we're going to allow you to really get into the mystery of it. As far as what exactly it is, I don't want to say because there's some big surprises and reveals in there. But we're gonna go to the building, we're going to go inside of it. We're going to to see ... who was there. And there are going to be a lot of fun twist and repeat.
